ICELAND ROAD TRIP
Visiting Iceland had been a dream for a long time and a road trip is often the best way to see as much as possible your own way, so this was the obvious choice for us. So what to see? Road 1 goes all around the island and is a pretty good way to see most of the highlights and that was pretty much how we did it, with a few variations on the way. We started from Reykjavik and drove counter clockwise for 8 days to get back. It was everything we hoped for. You usually stay at guest houses around the island, rooms are simple and you share bathroom. Camping is also common.
PRACTICAL
When to go: Most of the year is OK, but it varies a great deal. During winter the sun never rises and most roads are closed. Around summer the sun never sets, a great time for a road trip.
Getting there: There are international flights to Keflavik airport outside Reykjavik.
Money: Icelandic Kronas, VISA and Master card is OK.
Other: Watch out for sheep when driving, they are everywhere. Pack warm cloth, even during summer you’ll be happy you brought gloves and a warm hat.
